Making Your Own Home Accessories

Unique handmade items can cost a lot in stylish boutiques, but often you can create your own accessories with minimal cost and a little imagination. How nice it is to accentuate your home with something that no one else in the world will have, and to be able to say ' I made it myself' when a guest comments on how nice something is.

You don't need to be incredibly artistic, or a talented crafts person to make your own home accessories. Take a look around the shops for ideas and inspiration then hit the charity shops and car boot sales for materials. If you have left over paint from painting a room, this is great for creating co-ordinating accessories. An old picture frame or mirror can be painted up to match. Or you could simply use the frame and add a blackboard or corks to make a pin board if this would be of more use in your chosen room.

Hand painted kitchen wall tiles can be expensive, but plain white ones are very cheap, so why not paint your own? Why not get the kids to create a tile each? What a lovely way to preserve their artwork, on the kitchen wall as part of a splash back forever, where it will make you smile when you see it every day. Much nicer than simply sticking it on the wall or on the front of the fridge with a magnet!

Painted wooden signs are very popular. You'll see them with famous sayings on, or words such as 'Home' or 'Dream' but wouldn't it be more personal to make your own, and it couldn't be simpler. A cheap plank of wood and some leftover paint. You can get a stencil, but stick on alphabet stickers or if you're feeling confident try drawing it yourself freehand. Mark it out in pencil first for a guideline. Pick a phrase that's personal to you and family, or use your names to create signs for bedrooms.

Plain picture frames are easily enhanced. Paint them, then stick anything you can think of onto them, foreign postage stamps, shells, small plastic toys, mirror tiles or even fur. With a good imagination you can create all sorts of interesting picture frames. They make great presents too. You could enhance your home and save money on Christmas presents as well.

Vases can easily be converted into unusual lamps simply by drilling a hole in the bottom. You can buy a cheap lamp, pick one up second hand, or use one you don't want any more for the fittings. If you don't own a drill, or are not confident using one, then you could even make a lamp from a plant pot if you pick one that has a drainage hole in the bottom.

Creating your own home accessories is fun and they can look as good, if not better than any you might buy in a shop. It will be cheaper and you can personalise things just to your taste.
